U.S. Consulate and IBEU Join the American School in an "UP with English" Language Project for Youth in Rocinha
Rio de Janeiro, October 29, 2012
On October 27, representatives from the U.S. Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro and binational center Instituto Brasil-Estados Unidos (IBEU) visited the American School in Rio de Janeiro (EARJ) to announce yet another partnership. An IBEU teacher will now assist a group of 15 EARJ students who teach English to 50+ youth from the Rocinha community. This EARJ-led volunteer project has been in existence for ten years and will now have educational materials and professional teaching assistance from IBEU.
U.S. Consul General in Rio de Janeiro, John. S. Creamer, told the students that learning a foreign language requires effort and persistence, but is very rewarding. IBEU’s General Superintendent, Cristina Daibert, said that it is a pleasure to take part in such a successful project and thanked the Consulate for the support and the administrators at EARJ for the opportunity to collaborate.
The U.S. Consulate General and IBEU have similar partnerships in the pacified communities of Providência, Cidade de Deus and Complexo do Alemão. The project is called UP with English and provides quality English language instruction to local adolescent. The first UP with English class, in Cantagalo, finished their two year course in July, 2012.
