U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta visited Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro from April 24-26, as part of the first ever Defense Cooperation Dialogue with Minister of Defense Amorim.  The Dialogue was formed and announced by Presidents Rouseff and Obama at their meeting earlier this month in Washington, DC.  This is the first visit to Brazil by a United States Secretary of Defense since 2005.

On April 25, in Rio de Janeiro, Panetta delivered a speech at the Brazilian War College (Escola Superior de Guerra), in which he discussed U.S. Brazil defense cooperation.  Following the speech, Secretary Panetta responded to questions from the students in the audience.  Immediately following, he laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National Monument to the Casualties of World War II, honoring Brazil’s contributions to allied efforts during WWII.  Secretary Panetta was also invited by Brazilian military officials for additional events at the Brazilian Marine Base in Rio de Janeiro.

Secretary Panetta was sworn in as the 23rd Secretary of Defense on July 1, 2011.
