Rio de Janeiro, April 18, 2012
The U.S. Consul General in Rio de Janeiro, Dennis Hearne, visited Vitória on April 18 for the official launch of the UP with English program in the state and for a meeting with Espírito Santos State Vice Governor Givaldo Vieira. The course was developed in partnership with IBEUV, the State Government of Espírito Santo and Movimento Espírito Santo em Ação. The event took place at the Governor’s Office, and was attended by Vice Governor Givaldo Vieira, Secretary of Education, Klinger Barbosa Alves, and Secretary for Strategic Actions, André de Albuquerque Garcia, among others. Other participants in the UP with English launch included students of the course, and Espírito Santo exchange program alumni from the Youth Ambassador program, created by the U.S. Mission in Brazil.
“It’s with great pleasure that we bring UP with English to Espírito Santo. The project, which is already underway in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, will help build the capacity of young, economically disadvantaged students. Espírito Santo is receiving foreign investments, and the State needs skilled manpower to meet the demand for qualified professionals. It’s an honor to contribute to this effort with the Espírito Santo Government, along with our partners IBEUV and Movimento Espírito Santo em Ação”, stated Consul General Dennis Hearne.
The UP with English program benefits 40 young students, between the ages of 14 and 18, from Mário Gurgel State School at Terra Vermelha Community, in Vila Velha, and another 20 students from Elza Lemos Andreatta State School at São Pedro Community in Vitória, for a two-year period.
Besides Espírito Santo, the UP with English is successfully in place in Bahia, and also in three pacified communities in Rio de Janeiro. The goal of the project is to teach English for practical usage in order to help students in their professional development. In addition to the classes, students will take courses on concepts of entrepreneurship, entry into the job market – especially in the hospitality and tourism industries, and will be hosted for guided visits at various companies.
