U.S. Specialist Discusses Smart Cities and Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais
Between April 23 and 27, 2012, Dr. David J. Jhirad, Chair Professor of Environmental Policy and Director of the Energy Resources and Environment Program at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), visited Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, Prof. Jhirad discussed themes related to green economies, sustainable development and smart cities.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta Visits Rio de Janeiro
U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta visited Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro from April 24-26, as part of the first ever Defense Cooperation Dialogue with Minister of Defense Amorim. The Dialogue was formed and announced by Presidents Rouseff and Obama at their meeting earlier this month in Washington, DC. This is the first visit to Brazil by a United States Secretary of Defense since 2005.

From April 23-27, the U.S. Consulate General, in partnership with EducationUSA, fully supported the participation of the President of the 'Forum on Education Abroad', Brian Whalen, on two major international meetings in the education field, held in Rio Janeiro.

United States Consulate General Launches English program UP with English in Espírito Santo
The U.S. Consul General in Rio de Janeiro, Dennis Hearne, visited Vitória on April 18 for the official launch of the UP with English program in the state and for a meeting with Espírito Santos State Vice Governor Givaldo Vieira. The course was developed in partnership with IBEUV, the State Government of Espírito Santo and Movimento Espírito Santo em Ação. The event took place at the Governor’s Office, and was attended by Vice Governor Givaldo Vieira, Secretary of Education, Klinger Barbosa Alves, and Secretary for Strategic Actions, André de Albuquerque Garcia, among others.

Georgia Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle Visits Brazil
Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle led a delegation from Georgia’s tourism industry to meet with representatives from Brazil’s tourism sector. The group visited São Paulo from April 10-12, and were in Rio from April 13-14.

U.S. Embassy and Consulates Change Visa Application Process Beginning on April 30th

Beginning on April 30, 2012, the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Brazil will be changing the visa application process. A new call center and website will be launched on April 30, 2012. Applicants can obtain visa information and schedule appointments on the new website. -
The english3 (English Cubed) is an intensive English course that aims to prepare graduate students interested in the Brazilian Federal Government program: Science without Borders. The program will provide 101,000 scholarships for study abroad by 2015 (75,000 scholarships at the federal level, and 26,000 in partnership with the private sector). The main goal of english3 is to leverage Science Without Borders students' English proficiency, and at the same time prepare them for academic life in the United States.
